Jump up and Dance

Did you know we should be doing an hour of exercise a day? We actually learnt it's even better if you can do 90 minutes (or an hour and a half as one of our Year 3's pointed out) a day! It's lucky we have lunch time and PE lessons at school to run around in!

We have been learning about the importance of exercise. We all jumped up and had a dance in West Base today and saw the effects of exercise on our bodies. We saw our cheeks went red, we got out of breath and we tried to take our pulse - our hearts were definitely beating faster after we had been dancing.

We wanted to share the importance of exercise so we have designed some posters using Pic collage to encourage people to do more exercise.

Body Parts

We had a visit from the life education van last week which was great fun, we always love meting Harold the giraffe and learning about our bodies. We really enjoyed being able to share everything we have learnt so far through our 'we are what we eat topic' with our visitors.

Following the visit from the life education van we have been using information books to find out about parts of our body, both inside and out.

We used this information to create a number of posters. We used a variety of different techniques to make out posters, we hope you like them!

What's on your menu.

Last week we looked at the different food groups in our diets and the importance of each food group. We thought we could use this information to design our own menus for a restaurant.

Our task was to try and use all the different food groups to make sure we could offer our customers a balanced diet.

We used the great templates in Purple mash to help design our menus. I think you will agree our students definitely created some interesting choices.

The Giant Jam sandwich

In Literacy we have been reading the book The Giant Jam Sandwich.



We have been writing lots of different instruction in our base. We have written how to make a jam sandwich - it was hard to remember to write everything and even harder when our partners had to act out our instructions!





Our next task will be to make some bread and write instructions to go with it! We are looking forward to this.

Fruity Faces.

For our topic work this week we have this week been looking at the art work of Giuseppe Arcimboldo. We loved seeing how many different fruits we could spot in his amazing paintings.

This is the picture we looked at in out learning base. How many different fruits and vegetables can you spot?


We thought we would then try and create our own faces using real life fruit and vegetables. Here are our fab results, we hope you like them.

Bread Tasting (Pupil Post)

We tasted some bread and it was brown sliced and it was delicious.
We tasted white bread and it was a little bit nice but it was delicious. 
We write how it tasted and felt and looked.
Miss Watson made her own jam sandwich and she ate it all to her self.
we ate some whole mill pitter bread and it was delicious.

We are what we eat

This term out IPC topic is called 'We are what we eat'.

In literacy the children will be studying instructions and how to write a recipe as we read The Giant Jam Sandwich by John Vernon Lord. As we move into the plant section of our science, we will look at how information books use a glossary and how it is arranged in alphabetical order. We will also use the story set in Africa Handa’s Surprise by Eileen Browne as we think about healthy eating.



In Numeracy the children will continue to work with the four calculations, focusing particularly on multiplication and division. We will continue with solving problems, using fractions and working with shapes.


In Design Technology the children will be tasting and evaluating different types of bread. We will then plan to make our own bread, taste it and evaluate that too.


In the arts the children will use a variety of materials to create their own seed pictures. They will look at a range of menus and design their own. They will work on creating a still life piece, using chalks and pastels.


In Science the children will look at food groups and the effects of each food group on the body. We will look at the effects of exercise on the body and how healthy eating helps our teeth. We will also be planting some early vegetables, identifying the parts of a plant and what they need to grow healthily.

In Geography the children will discover the journey a banana makes to reach our fruit bowls.


In History the children will look at how the food we consume has changed over the recent past.In ICT the children will use PurpleMash to create our own menus. Whilst using Google Earth to locate where bananas are grown and follow the route they take to reach us.


 Important DaysWest Base has PE on Tuesday and Friday. East Base have PE on Monday and Tuesday; please make sure your child’s kit is in school on those days.
