Artists at work

Yesterday afternoon we were looking at a number of buildings old and new. We looked at old St Paul's Cathederal and focused on the amazing detail that went into to making such a magnificent building. Sadly this was destroyed during the Great Fire of London .

We have been using charcol to make study the details in this historic building. We all individually focused on a small section of the cathedral and when we put the pieces back together we created a magnificent display.

All the Fun of the Fair!

In West Base 2 we have made a start on our new topic All the Fun of the Fair. We will be designing and making our own model fairground ride, which must have a moving mechanism. Mr Newman came to visit us and show us several different ways to make a moving part. He also showed us how to safely and securely join different materials.

We enjoyed listening to Mr Newman

Mr Newman showed us how to use a glue gun safely.

We learnt how to cut wire safely too.

Charlie was a 'sawing' success!

We hope to use a pulley in our designs as they worked very well. Watch the video below to see how Lawrence was able to move Mr Newman's ferris wheel.

Architects at work

This afternoon we having been designing our own dream buildings, thinking what they would have in them and what materials they would be made from.

We set to work creating some of our own fantasy buildings, we enjoyed using lots of different shapes  and thinking about the location of our dream buildings.

After a busy afternoon of model making we were lucky enought for have a visit from a real life Architect. We learnt about the different stages in the design process and the teams of people involved in the making of a building. We also found out lots about the different materials buildings could be made from and even heard about a building made from hay!

Thank you so much to our visiting Architect for taking the time to come in and talk to us.

We have had more certificates over the half term holidays - well done everyone. We hope you enjoy going for more Gold certificates next week.

More Coding Success

Some more of us have completed the Hour of Code with Anna and Elsa or the Angry Birds. We have enjoyed coding so much that we are starting a Coding Club next week in our lunch break. We will be using Scratch and Hopscotch. Watch this space for some of our creations.

West Base Mathletics Champions

We have once again been celebrating our Mathletics champions in West Base.

Well done to all the children who have been playing mathletics over the half term. It's great to see pupils enjoying their Maths learning outside the school day.

Cakes from the Puddling Lane Bakery

Today we have been thining about all the yummy items for sale in the Bakers on Pudding Lane in 1666 London.

We have discovered that this was where the Great Fire of London started in a man called Thomas Farriner's Bakery. We found a recipe showing what they may have been baking at the time.

During Maths today some of West Base thought we could try making some of these cakes. All we had was this recipe to follow, it was tricky understanding the old english.

We had to folow the recipe, collect together and weigh the correct ingredients and even separate an egg (This was tricky and one may have ended up on the floor, whoops!)

It was really good fun baking, weighing and measuring but the best part was tasting!

West Base: Great Fire of London Drama

In West Base literacy lessons we are learning all about the great fire of London. We have been using drama to think about what it might have been like to be living in London during 1666.

Year 6 visit West Base

This afternoon we were luck enought to have some year 6 visitors in West Base. Pupils were keen to show off the coding skills we had learnt this half term on scratch junior and Hopscotch. We were very pleased when the year 6 students could then teach us how to use scratch on the chromebooks. It was great fun learning from our older students.

Thank you so much to everyone for coming down and organising today it was great fun and we hope it can happen again soon.

Safer Internet Day

Today has been safer Internet day and we have been learning about how to stay safe online. We have been reminding ourselves of the 'SMART' rules and have created some posters.

We have also been looking online to see our digital footprints. It's funny to think that the things available online now will still be there for the rest of our lives! We have been thinking carefully about the sort of information we should share.

Debating in Literacy

We have been reading 'I was a Rat' by Phillip Pulman during our literacy lessons. It is set in the past and the main character, Roger. gets taken to be a 'turn' in a side show at a local fair by a character called Mr Tapscrew.

We had a class debate to decide if we thought it was morally wrong to put Roger into the fair. We made notes as a group to prepare for our debate.

We took it in turns to put forward our opinions and waved our books in support, just like in parliament, if we agreed with an opinion.

Here we are putting forward our opinions:

Lucy said Roger was losing weight as Mr Tapscrew didn't feed him healthy food and that was unkind.

We all agreed with Lucy

Emma said that Mr Tapscrew was taking advantage of Roger.

Rex said that Mr Tapscrew was mean.

We finished with a vote and we deiced that we thought Mr Tapscrew should not be allowed to have a fair side show any more.

West Base 2 are Coding Crazy

Lots of us have been completing our Hour of Code in West Base 2. There are 3 different ways to complete the Hour. You can help Anna and Elsa complete complex snowflake patterns or use the Angry Birds to complete a maze or help the Flappy Birds.

Once complete we had to download our certificate and attach it in an email to our teachers.

Here we all are ...

Let's hope we get more certificates over the weekend.
